Since The Tiwi of North Australia was first published in 1960, it has become a classic among ethnographic monographs, not only for the vividness of the ethnographic account of traditional culture, but also for its approach to the documentation of culture change. More than a generation of college and university students have come to know of hunting and gathering peoples throught this book, as well as how such societies have changed under pressures from outsiders.
